Forgotten Fossil in Drawer Confirmed as First-Ever Dinosaur Bone Discovered in Antarctica


A dinosaur vertebra collected in 1985 and left forgotten in a cabinet for 40 years has been identified as the very first dinosaur bone ever found on the continent of Antarctica — a remarkable discovery that rewrites what we know about prehistoric life at the South Pole.  

A small, unassuming fossil that sat unnoticed in a drawer at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) headquarters in Cambridge for four decades has been confirmed as the first-ever dinosaur bone discovered in Antarctica. The specimen — a vertebra from the tail region of a Titanosaur — was originally unearthed in 1985 on James Ross Island, off the Antarctic Peninsula, by geologist Dr Mike Thomson, who simply noted in his field notebook that it appeared to be "vertebra of large reptile." At the time, the research team suspected it might belong to a marine reptile, and the fossil was catalogued and stored away, remaining unexamined until recently when Dr Mark Evans, collections manager at BAS, stumbled across it while reviewing thousands of specimens brought back from Antarctic expeditions.
 
Upon closer inspection, Evans recognised distinctive features that pointed unmistakably to a dinosaur. He brought the fossil to Professor Paul Barrett of London's Natural History Museum, a leading dinosaur expert, who confirmed its identity as a Titanosaur vertebra — a group of giant, long-necked, plant-eating dinosaurs that included some of the largest land animals to ever live. "As soon as I saw it, I knew what we were dealing with… it was a dead cert we were dealing with a Titanosaur," Barrett told BBC News. The distinctive ball-and-socket shape of the joint at both ends of the bone is a feature unique to this subgroup of dinosaurs. From the size of the vertebra — roughly 10 centimetres wide — the scientists estimate the animal was around 7 metres in length, suggesting it may have been a juvenile or a smaller adult species rather than one of the truly colossal Titanosaurs that could reach 35 metres.
 
The discovery has profound implications for understanding Antarctica's prehistoric past. Eighty-two million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous Period when this Titanosaur lived, Antarctica was not the frozen desert we know today. Instead, it was covered in lush, temperate forests, teeming with plant and animal life, and supported a diverse ecosystem capable of sustaining massive herbivores. The continent's current ice cover makes it one of the most challenging places on Earth for palaeontological fieldwork, meaning discoveries like this — even those made decades ago — are vital for piecing together the planet's climatic and evolutionary history. The finding, published in the journal Acta Palaeontologica Polonica, also underscores how much valuable scientific evidence may remain hidden within museum collections, waiting to be recognised.
