UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has strongly criticized FIFA president Gianni Infantino's now-shelved World Cup commercial scheme, calling it more damaging to football than the failed European Super League project.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has described Gianni Infantino's abandoned plan to sell stakes in the World Cup as "even worse than the Super League," and warned that the FIFA president will face an opponent if he seeks re-election next March. The FIFA Forward Enterprise scheme was shelved earlier this month following widespread opposition across world football.
Ceferin accused Infantino of attempting to sell the sport to private investors, and stated that UEFA, along with CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation, remains ready to boycott FIFA competitions if necessary. He also revealed that the Nordic football associations have issued a statement saying they have lost confidence in Infantino, while Norway became the first member association to publicly call for his resignation.
Infantino has spent recent weeks courting support from CONCACAF members in the Dominican Republic, but faces growing opposition. Ceferin, who is expected to run unopposed for a fourth term as UEFA president next year, said he will not run for the FIFA presidency himself, but believes Infantino will face a challenger in the March election in Rabat. The two men have not spoken since the controversy began.
