Paredes Banned 10 Games, Molina 7, as FIFA Punishes Argentina for World Cup Final Brawl

FIFA has handed down severe disciplinary sanctions following the chaotic scenes that marred the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, with several key players receiving lengthy suspensions.

FIFA has suspended a number of Argentina players for their involvement in the post-match confrontation that followed the 2026 World Cup final against Spain. The match, which Spain won 1-0, descended into chaos after the final whistle, with players and staff from both sides clashing on the pitch.

Leandro Paredes received the heaviest punishment, being handed a 10-match suspension for his role in the disturbances. Nahuel Molina was banned for seven matches, while Thiago Almada and another unnamed player each received two-match suspensions. The Argentine Football Association has also been fined and warned regarding future conduct.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee found that Argentina players had acted aggressively toward Spain’s players and match officials after the conclusion of the final, with several instances of pushing, shoving, and verbal abuse captured on broadcast footage. The report stated that the behaviour was unacceptable, fell far short of the standards expected at a World Cup final, and undermined the integrity of the competition.

The suspensions mean Paredes and Molina will be unavailable for Argentina’s upcoming World Cup qualifying matches and international friendlies, casting doubt on their places in the squad for the next major tournament. Argentina’s football body has until the end of the week to decide whether to appeal the sanctions.

No Spanish players were suspended, though the federation was reminded of its responsibilities to ensure order and prevent similar incidents in future matches. FIFA noted that both teams have a duty to respect the spirit of fair play at all times.

The decision has drawn mixed reaction globally, with many describing the sanctions as among the harshest ever handed down in relation to a World Cup final.
