The Oceania Institute of Technology has unveiled a massive new online learning platform offering 500 self-paced micro-courses, designed to boost workforce skills and help Fiji's economy adapt to rapid technological change.
Fiji's Public Service Commission has partnered with the Oceania Institute of Technology (OIT) to launch an ambitious new digital skills initiative: a library of 500 online, self-paced courses available to workers across the country. The platform was officially unveiled by PSC Chair Luke Rokovada, who emphasised the critical importance of continuous learning in a fast-evolving global economy. "We all know that in today's world, if you stop learning, you stop growing," Rokovada stated. "Technology is moving so fast that what seemed like science fiction yesterday is our reality today. For a developing country like ours, we don't always need to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes the smartest move is simply to find the best global models and make them work for our people."
The courses are designed to be flexible and practical, allowing workers to build skills without leaving employment or disrupting daily routines. The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects tailored to Fiji's growing sectors, including digital literacy, business management, hospitality, and technical trades. OIT founder Hasmukh Lal explained that the institute focuses not just on training supply but on meeting real workforce demand through short, targeted certifications and micro-qualifications. "We partner with institutes like OIT to help our industry upskill and always grow the talent," Rokovada added, noting that brain drain remains a significant challenge for the nation. The platform is now open to both individuals and organisations, with the institute encouraging businesses to invest in staff development through the affordable, accessible training options.
